Psychotherapy London

What is psychotherapy?

Harrison Psychology Group London are experts in psychotherapy, which is a very general term used to describe psychological therapy. In psychotherapy, people speak to a therapist about their emotional pain, stress, and life difficulties.

Most people imagine a person talking at length to a therapist who nods on occasion and barely mutters a word, but this isn’t what therapy looks like anymore. These days therapists take more of an active role. They work collaboratively with clients to identify their main problem areas. They explain what is happening psychologically, behaviourally and physically and work with clients to make meaningful changes.

There are many different types of psychotherapy, so you may wish to seek out some research before deciding what kind of therapy feels most appealing to you:

  • People who want a lot of structure, guidance and exercises between sessions may turn to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT).

  • Individuals who wish to understand the relationship between their past experiences and present struggles may be attracted to a more psychodynamic approach.

  • A person going through the loss of a loved one or recovering from substance abuse might most benefit from mindfulness therapy.

  • Some people may wish to involve spirituality to understand their pain and, therefore, seek transpersonal therapy or Buddhist psychology.

There are many different types of psychotherapy, all of which offer their unique perspectives on human pain and suffering and the path to healing.

How can psychotherapy help me?

Psychotherapy London

The traditional analytic definition of psychosis is doing the same thing repeatedly but expecting a different result. Whilst this most certainly does not match our modern description of psychosis, it does accurately describe how we become stuck in our problems. If you are feeling stuck, find yourself repeating old and unhelpful patterns, experience emotional pain or difficulty that isn’t passing, struggle in your relationships with others or do not understand why you struggle, then psychotherapy could be beneficial for you.

While most of us are very good at seeing how our friends and family members get themselves in trouble, we find it very hard to see how we, our own selves, do the same. It’s as if we’re too close. Psychotherapy isn’t about ranting or whining to someone for an hour a week; it’s about gaining perspective on your issues and pain. Through psychotherapy, your therapist at Harrison Psychology Group London can give you a psychoeducation around your emotions and behaviours, help you understand why you do the things you do, point out patterns you cannot typically see and, most importantly, point you down the path to healing.

What can I expect from psychotherapy from Harrison Psychology Group London?

What you can expect will vary based on the therapist and the type of therapy. But speaking for our practice, you can expect to be a bit uncomfortable in the beginning. It’s a bit strange to meet someone new and open up about how you’re hurting or struggling. This is perfectly normal. Still, we will really work to make you feel safe. The environment should be welcoming, compassionate, non-judgmental and friendly. In time, you will start to become familiar with your patterns, and you will learn to watch both your thoughts and feelings as they come and go. You will explore the relationship between your earlier life experiences, and the difficulty you’re going through now, why you make the decisions you make and why you feel the way you feel.

Taken together, we will outline with you the work that needs to be done to make a change, and this will require both practice and patience. You will have to learn to cultivate some self-compassion and self-understanding, and you will begin to change for the better. As you gradually heal, you will eventually find yourself feeling better and maybe not knowing what to talk about in therapy! This is a good sign as it means you’re getting better. As you heal, we will drop down in the number of sessions we have until you find yourself not needing any sessions at all. Then we end!
